This Month's Top Tips

Stay in for dessert

Instead of going out for something sweet, treat family and friends to a made-from-scratch pie or batch of cookies at your house – make a night of it with movies or games. Kids can help with the baking, especially when you use one of these simple, but delicious, dessert recipes recommended by our entertaining expert Leigh Ann: Bake up a batch of cookies and stay in for dessert

Brown bag it 3 days a week and save up to $450 a year

Bring your lunch to work – save $450-$780 a year!
Brown bagging it instead of eating out can really add up. An average meal at a fast food restaurant costs about $6. Go out to a nicer place, and you'll spend even more – plus a tip! Pack your lunch and you could save at least $3 a day. How?

Ham & Cheese Sandwich: $1.20

Apple: 50¢

Snack Size Bagged Chips: 30¢

Snack Size Cookie Pack (3 cookies total): 40¢

Bottled Water or Pop: 60¢

Brown Bag Lunch TOTAL: $3 per day, $15 per week

Compared to Fast Food Lunch TOTAL: $6 per day, $30 per week

The difference: $15 per week, $780 per year

Even substituting a sack lunch for a meal out every other day can make a big difference -- bring your lunch from home Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and you'll save $9 a week... that's over $450 a year!

  • Purchase the larger containers of your favorite juice – they're
usually far less expensive per serving than single serve bottlesFill reusable bottles with your favorite juice to enjoy on the go

Enjoy new-to-you clothes without spending a dime -- host a clothing swap

Host a clothing swap with friends

That dress you wore once... those jeans that shrunk a little in the wash... that shirt you got as a gift... how many of the clothes in your closet just stay on the hangers day after day? Whatever the reason, everyone has a few pieces that no longer make it into the regular wardrobe rotation. So invite your friends over for a clothing swap where everyone can get something new without spending a dime!

  • Have your friends comb their closets for gently used items they haven't worn often or in a long time – shoes, jewelry and other accessories included
  • Set up full-length mirrors and designate certain rooms in your home as changing areas
  • Serve food and drinks for a fun party atmosphere
  • After the swap is over, donate any remaining clothes to a local charity

Save energy and money when you use a drying rack instead of a dryerHang your clothes to dry any time of the year

Save energy and money -- ditch your dryer every now and then and use an indoor drying rack instead. The new metal racks are super sturdy and easily lock into place, plus they include a mesh top shelf that helps your sweaters dry without stretching them out.
