Entice
Hummingbirds & Butterflies with these
beautiful plants!
If
you're attracted to a garden with bright
blooming flowers, you're not alone… Hummingbirds
and butterflies flock to sunny gardens full
of colorful blooms. These friends of the
garden are not only fun to watch as they
fly about, but hummingbirds and butterflies
also help your plants stay healthy by aiding
pollination.
So
how do you entice them to spend more time
in your garden? Van Bourgondien Nurseries
has made it easy by putting together a collection
of perennials, shrubs and vines selected
for their unique ability to attract hummingbirds
and butterflies. This special selection
is available only at your Fred Meyer Garden
Center!
Hummingbirds
are attracted to vivid reds, oranges
and yellows, but any fragrant flower with
nectar and flat petals suitable for perching
will do. Popular choices include Lobelia,
Giant Shirley, Foxglove,
Columbine, Penstemon,
Liatris, Trumpet
Vine and Weigela.
Butterflies
look to gardens as a source of
food and a place to lay their eggs. Plants
butterflies find irresistible are Butterfly
Bush, Liatris,
Asclepias, Salvia
and Echinacea.
You'll
find these varieties and more in our Hummingbird
& Butterfly Garden Collection – which
makes it simple for you to create an attractive
gathering place these little flyers will
return to again and again. Have fun!
While
much of the information in these tips is
applicable in several gardening zones/climates,
some of the plants and timing suggested
are best suited to the Northwest, generally
in the mild/wet growing regions found along
the I-5 corridor. You should make appropriate
adjustments or consult local gardening experts
in regions whose climates differ from this
area of the Northwest.
