1 Gallon Perennial for May
Dianthus Spotty
Every
rock garden and early spring perennial border
needs the cheery brightness of Dianthus
Spotty. A low mat of growth will be covered
with two-tone flowers in early to late May.
This dwarf 5" tall Dianthus features unique
red blooms festooned with silvery white
spots -- hence the name. Eye catching from
a distance and very cute up close. Each
plant will expand to provide a good square
foot or more of bloom.
Flowering
over a long period of time through the cool
Northwest springtime, this Dianthus will
continue to bloom intermittently through
the summer. Easy to care for; a quick haircut
takes off the
old blooms and brings on another flush of
growth.
Reliable
and hardy year after year. Provide them
with full sun, good drainage and a moderate
feeding. Often grown as a border around
lawns, Dianthus Spotty benefits from typical
lawn care fertilizing and irrigation programs.
While
much of the information in this tip is applicable
in several gardening zones/climates, some
of the plants and timing suggested are best
suited to the Northwest, generally in the
mild/wet growing regions found along the
I-5 corridor. You should make appropriate
adjustments or consult local gardening experts
in regions whose climates differ from this
area of the Northwest.
