Do Associates really make a difference in their communities? At Fred Meyer they do. In 1991 a small group of enthusiastic, caring Associates with a “vision for volunteering” formed the Fred Meyer Volunteers. They set out to establish a network of volunteers that now encompasses all of our stores, warehouses and offices. Every location has a volunteer representative who organizes volunteer events in their community.
Today our Associates participate in nonprofit organizations and community volunteer activities in all 4 states in which Fred Meyer does business. In 2011 our associates participated in over 300 volunteer events, spending more than 20,000 hours of their own time, and raising over $350,000 for local and national charities. Some of these organizations include American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Komen for the Cure, Junior Achievement, SOLV, March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake, Cascade AIDS Walk, ALS Walk, Special Olympics Polar Plunge, The American Red Cross, Portland Rescue Mission, Oregon Humane Society, Portland Rose Festival, YWCA, JDRF, ADA, hundreds of community fairs and celebrations, and several Shop with A Cop events. With Relay for Life, more than 200 teams comprised of Fred Meyer Associates and their families raised more than $200,000 in 2011.
The Fred Meyer volunteer motto is: Fred Meyer Volunteers: A little time. A little effort. A better community.
Fred Meyer Fund... Your Spare Change Really Adds Up
As Mr. Meyer used to say, “In all giving, give thoughtfully. Even small amounts can accomplish great tasks.” That’s especially true with those coin donation boxes you see at the end of the Fred Meyer check lanes. The nickels, dimes and quarters you drop in there are a big help to food banks, youth programs, cancer research and troop support in your community. Last year your spare change added up to more than $600,000 in donations. Thank you!
